Kelly Gorrell’s Multimedia Companion Entry
The article I picked is from Facebook.com, titled, “Stories. People using Facebook in extraordinary ways.” I chose this piece because I currently have friends studying abroad, and at times I feel very disconnected to them knowing they are so far away. I found this interactive media site to be very interesting. Readers are able to pick a continent or language, and then focus on a specific region, learning about similarities and connections made throughout the world through technology. I believe the media used on this site helps to enhance the reader’s experience. The site’s text glosses over the connections Facebook makes with users all over the world. With the interactive media, I was able to pick and choose which continents I wanted to explore; therefore, never feeling overwhelmed by information.
I thought the multimedia piece really drove home the point that the United States shares a lot of things with other countries, like tourism and trade. It shows how important we are as a country, and how the US gave people from other countries opportunity to thrive.
This piece first drew me in because facebook is something that a lot of people use everyday to connect with friends from any where in the globe. Me, personally, am friends with cousins from Ireland and in different parts of the United States and I like to keep in touch with them from time to time. It was interesting to see the connections of facebook friends throughout the world and the multimedia piece is a fun way to look at the countries from around the globe and see the connections that they have amongst other countries.
I found this very entertaining, at first i was just clicking on the bubbles and watching them as they jiggled around each-other. But once i was clicking on the different colors i actually started paying attention to what languages were being spoken and where. It was defiantly a very entertaining way to find out where languages are spoken, much better then reading about it.
I agree with the author in that this map helps to demonstrate how the different parts of the world are connected to each other and how people are able to communicate with one another through technology, such as Facebook. This technology definitely makes the world seem smaller and sheds some light as to why different parts of the world are connected to each other.
That is a really cool multimedia display! It was fascinating to learn which countries were connected to others, and it would provide a lot of opportunities for story ideas to discover why one country would be so linked to certain other ones.
